Tomato Toast

September is always a slower, more quiet month as everyone gets back into their usual routines. It was also still pretty hot around here, so there was no way I was cracking open a can of pumpkin, and was still eating peaches and tomatoes (see above, plus here and here). I tried a couple of new places that I loved, plus cooked a lot at home:

  • Heather, Jenny and I went to Burro in Burlington for tacos and it was incredible! We shared guac & chips, patatas bravas, and then we each had a few tacos. Everything was fantastic and I had to keep telling myself I could go back so I wouldn’t have FOMO at not trying everything on the menu.
  • Every day on my walk home from work, I pass CafĂ© Landwer, and it’s always packed with people. I wondered if it was actually good, or just popular because of it’s location, so Krishna and I met up there to see what the story was. They have something on the menu called “Fancy Hummus Bowls” and this could not be more up my alley. We had the one with roasted mushrooms and caramelized onions on top, and it comes with warm delicious bread to dunk in it. We also shared a Mediterranean salad, which was pretty basic, but still tasty. I need to return for all the other Fancy Hummus Bowls!
  • I joined the Malixi family once again this year for apple picking at Chudleigh’s, and went totally overboard picking Honeycrisp and Northern Spy apples. Remind me next year to reign it in!
  • I made a couple of things from the archives this month: this salad and this Fall-ish fave.
  • And here are a few other faves that I made that I haven’t blogged before: this fish, these falafel, this quick and easy shrimp.

Other non-foodie things I was obsessed with this month:

  • My luck seems to have turned around with my book selections, because I read my favourite book of the year BY FAR this month: Ask Again Yes. This is my favourite kind of book; it starts off as a seemingly simple story of two families living next door to each other, but develops into so much more. I also read Red, White & Royal Blue which I liked, and Hillbilly Elegy which reminded me of Educated.
  • I talked about it in last month’s recap, but it really has been a barren wasteland of offerings at the movie theatre lately. With one exception: Hustlers. I LOVED this movie! J.Lo is fantastic in it, the early ’00s nostalgia is on fire, and it has a celeb cameo so great that I was still thinking about it for days afterward.
  • I got TIFF tickets to see the premiere of the first two episodes of Briarpatch, a new show from Andy Greenwald. Andy and Chris Ryan are my imaginary podcast best friends; I’ve been listening to them since the Hollywood Prospectus days on Grantland. It was so fun to see Andy in person and get a sneak peak of the show. I can’t wait to watch the whole thing!
