Descendants

I was so focused on my friend’s Wedding Cake for the first half of the month, and then recovering after it was over, that I really didn’t get up to much else. I do, however, have three pizza related items to discuss:

  • We had TWO Pizza Club Book Clubs this month, since we missed the one at the end of March. For the first one, we ordered in Vesuvio to my friend Jen’s house. We had the Volcano, a spicy pizza with hot peppers and hot salami and sausage that’s on Toronto Life’s list of the 25 best pizzas in Toronto. For our second pizza we created our own with pesto, chicken, goat cheese and sundried tomatoes. Both were delicious!
  • For our regularly scheduled Book Club at the end of April, I introduced the girls to Descendant, which I had for the first time last summer. This is Detroit Style Pizza with to-die-for crispy, chewy crust that’s baked in a square pan. We had three small pizzas: Pepperoni, Truff’ghi and the day’s special which was a Mexican pizza with chorizo, pickled jalepanos, ranch sauce, pickled onions and cilantro and chives. I can’t even pick my favourite, they were all SO good.
  • Lastly, and this is kind of a random one, but did you know FORTINOS (of all places) makes incredible pizza?! I had it once last year and forgot about it, but then had it again this month while watching Raptors playoffs at my yoga teacher’s house (we’re big fans!). We had one spicy pizza with pepperoni, hot peppers and olives and another one with assorted veggies. It was so good! I was very surprised. I don’t have a Fortinos close to me, but I’m willing to make a special trip for pizza this good.

Other non-foodie things I was obsessed with this month:

  • So many people have been telling me to watch Nailed It! on Netflix, which is like a reality/game show about baking disasters. I refused to watch until AFTER the Wedding Cake was done, because I just couldn’t have that bad mojo in my brain. Anyway, I binged on all the episodes the day after the wedding and laughed so hard I almost rolled off my couch. LMAO at the guy who just decided to stack up his cake layers with NO ICING IN BETWEEN!
  • I spent a lot of time on my couch this month being sad about a work situation, but cheered myself up by watching all the Marvel movies on Netflix, in order, to get ready for Infinity War. Kristine and I saw it on opening night in an all ages theatre (as opposed to VIP, which is 19+) and I LOVED watching it in a huge crowd! People were actually cheering when their favourite Avengers came on screen which was so fun. Shout to the row of tween girls behind us that were opening WEEPING throughout the whole movie. They were kind of annoying, but you know what, if we were 14 and watching these, there’s a good chance that would have been us!
  • This month I read Amy Kaufman’s exposé of the Bachelor franchise, but it didn’t have enough dirt for me. It was more like the history of the show and some behind the scenes stuff. Junk food for my brain, just like the show! On a more literary tip, I also read Hunger by Roxane Gay and The Female Persuasion by Meg Wolitzer.
