*Update: 1/10/11 -> Beso Las Vegas filed for bankruptcy this week. But the soup!*
I’m not a Desperate Housewives fan, and I hate the Spurs, but I somehow managed to put these feelings aside, as we went to Eva Longoria Parker’s restaurant Beso in Las Vegas. It’s part of the new CityCenter, which consists of five new hotels that surround the Crystals “Retail & Entertainment” complex, which is where you can find Beso.
Our waiter told us that Beso, which means ‘kiss’ in Spanish, is a traditional steak/seafood house with a latin twist, which you can see by the menu. We both had Eva’s tortilla soup, which the waiter told is a family recipe from Eva’s grandmother’s that has been in the family for generations. It was awesome. It’s served in a neat way too; when your soup bowl comes to the table it’s filled with all the components that make tortilla soup amazing – sliced chicken, avocado, tortilla strips, spanish cheese (manchego? queso fresco?) – and then the waiter pours a rich, hot broth over the whole thing. Voila – soup! I’m also a sucker for a great bread basket, and ours had three different varieties in it: a pretzel breadstick, a cheese flatbread and a sourdough roll, which was perfect for soaking up the last bits of broth from the bowl.
Next up, Kristine had the Beso Paella that had lobster, shellfish, confit chicken and chorizo over saffron rice. I’m not that adventurous of a seafood eater yet, so I didn’t try it, but Kristine was a fan. I had Slow-Braised Short Ribs, in some manner of smoky, rich, red wine sauce. They came with a crispy potato, sautéed wild mushrooms, and garlic spinach. Let’s just say I ate the whole thing.
Well done, Eva.

October 5, 2010 6:52 pmYou should go Lei. I’ve been to Vegas 4 times, and i’ve pulled the slot machine just twice. But i’ve had some of the best meals ever there. I already have a mental list of restaurants to hit for next time!

October 5, 2010 10:51 amsounds yummy! friends of mine keep saying “let’s go to vegas!” and i’ve never found the appeal because i don’t gamble. but a few months ago, two of my friends went solely for the eats and they told me some great foodie stories. your last few entries, plus a chapter in bourdain’s new book about his experience at some high-profile chefs’ vegas outposts, is making me want to go!
