After eating our way around the perimeter of Trinity Bellwoods Park, it was time to hop on the streetcar and head east to Leslieville. Danielle and I have a shared love of pie, and when she visited in ’08 we went to Wanda’s Pie in the Sky, the undisputed pie champ of Toronto.  Then last summer when I was in Calgary, we took a drive out into the middle of nowhere for some amazing slices.

Pie is just one of those things…you either get it or you don’t. When you’re making a pie from scratch, there’s just so much time and love that have to go into it. Patience is a huge factor; this isn’t the type of thing you can throw together on a whim. At least I can’t. I need a clean kitchen, a deep breath and no interruptions. Truly amazing pie takes care, and planning, and a lot of TLC. And NO shortening in the crust!

Because of all these things, we have a true appreciation for a delicious piece of pie. The Canadian Pie Company had a lot to live up to, and it was totally on point. Danielle had a slice of blueberry and I had a slice of peach, but besides fruit pies, they also have an array of cream versions as well (banana cream, coconut cream etc.)

Your slice is served warm with a dusting of icing sugar, but you can also get a scoop of ice cream on top if you like. (We didn’t, and you’ll understand why not in a few posts). The crust is flaky and flavourful, and the filling is juicy and delicious. I can totally envision myself returning on a crisp Fall day with a good book and big appetite.
