My friend Kristine and her family are die-hard Eagles fans, so when their team made it to the Super Bowl this year, stakes were high. For me that is, because she ordered up a dozen cupcakes for their Super Bowl party, that needed to be “midnight green and say Fly Eagles Fly”. So much pressure! Not really, but I had a vision for how I wanted them to look, and I was really excited to make them, along with some cute football cookies I saw on Pinterest.
Luckily, my favourite place, Golda’s, actually did carry a forest green gel food colouring, but surprisingly not a football cookie cutter. I got a little creative with a Christmas lightbulb cookie cutter, and everything turned out great! Here’s what I did:
- Made a half batch each of vanilla and chocolate cupcakes from my new Prairie Girl Cupcake Cookbook that Danielle got me for Christmas. We’ll talk more about those soon, because they were legit the best cupcakes I have EVER made.
- Mixed up a batch of My Favourite Buttercream, and dyed about 2/3 of it the aforementioned midnight green, and left the rest white.
- I used a big open star tip for the green and piped rosettes on top, followed by a small white rosette using a medium closed tip.
- Obviously I had to have some type of sprinkle situation happening, so I used a very small amount of silver stars, so they were still very manly for the guys (I don’t think they would have cared either way!)
- I made a batch of Smitten Kitchen’s Brownie Roll-Out Cookies and cut out football shapes, as well as used my new alphabet cookie cutters for the Fly Eagles Fly letters.
- I placed the letters on top of the cupcakes, and for the footballs, I made a half batch of Annie’s Royal Icing to pipe on the detail in white.
- This couldn’t be easier and can obviously be customized to any teams colours!
- I was also very happy that the Eagles won, because I love an underdog, and am kind of sick of seeing Tom Brady win all the time.
