Roselle Treats

I read somewhere that March is like the Tuesday afternoon of months, and it’s so true. I didn’t go to Florida this year like I usually do, so the month felt extra long and kind of blah. I did do a few fun food related things, so here we go:

  • For our Book Club/Pizza Club this month, we went to Pi Co., and basically what is happening here is you stand at a counter in front of about 20 different toppings and create the pizza of your dreams. However, this is a nightmare for an indecisive Libra such as myself, and my friends’ pizzas were practically ready by the time I finally figured out what I wanted. Anyway, Pi Co is great because it’s quick, tasty and relatively cheap. I’d go back if I was in the area and needed to satisfy a pizza craving in under 15 minutes.
  • My friend Alexis had her baby boy on Oscar Sunday! I went to visit a couple of weeks later and brought a LOT of food for the family. I like to bring a meal to eat that day (or freeze for later) plus lots of snacks and things for breakfast (because I feel like people always forget to bring that sort of stuff for new moms). Anyway, I made: Spinach & Cheese Ravioli Lasagna (BIG hit with everyone), Maple Pecan Granola (recipe from Cookie & Kate’s book), Chocolate Peanut Butter Granola Bites, Blueberry Muffins (Smitten Kitchen’s new book), and Marbled Banana Bread.
  • Lots of baby news this month! We threw my friend/co-worker who’s having twins a baby shower at work. Our theme was “Al’s Ready to POP” and I made a “Things that Pop” treat bar with little bowls of caramel corn, pop rocks, blow pops and homemade rice krispie squares (with rainbow sprinkles on top of course). I got this idea from Pinterest and just thought it was so cute. Such a fun idea, and so easy to execute. If I had more time, I totally would have made homemade Pop Tarts as well.
  • I FINALLY went to Roselle! This was the highlight of my month! I’ve had a few treats from Roselle before (my friend got me some for my birthday last year), but this was my first time going in person. Janelle and I went over for a lunchtime adventure and tried three of the most beautiful and delicious desserts I’ve ever had (pictured above). We had a latte tart, chocolate opera cake, and a honey pistachio pastry thing (can’t remember the name!). Our favourite was the latte tart, but we loved everything. We both got a few cookies to take home, and I had the chocolate toffee pecan shortbread, double chocolate sea salt, and hazelnut with caramelized white chocolate. All incredible. Roselle also does a evening dessert service, so that’s next on my to-do list!
  • Have I mentioned I’m making a wedding cake in April? The bride came over for a tasting this month, and I spent a lot of time watching doweling videos on You Tube. Lots more on this to come.

Other non-foodie things I was obsessed with this month:

  • I hamster-sat for my niece’s hamster Twinkie this month, and I would like my trophy now, because I kept this creature alive for the week it was in my care. Thank you.
  • I finally watched Call Me By Your Name and I’m obsessed. This movie is just such a beautiful love story to watch unfold and I adored it. I thought Armie and Timothee had such a cute friendship on all their talk show appearances promoting the movie, but that’s like, nothing compared to their chemistry in the movie.
  • I had free movie passes from work, so Kristine and I went to see Love, Simon and it was so cute! We love a good high school movie and this one had everything, plus Josh Duhamel as a hot dad.
  • We read An American Marriage for for Book Club this month and it is so unlike anything I’ve ever read before. Every time I thought I had a handle on the themes of the book, or where it was going, something happened to make me change my perspective. I actually had to stop myself from reading it so fast, so I could savour and appreciate each chapter. Highly recommend. I also read The Wedding Date which was a really cute and fun romantic comedy, that needs to be made into a movie ASAP!
