I had a super fun, though way too brief, visit with Danielle in St. John’s after my work trip to Halifax last week. Obviously we got up to some good eats (and maybe a trip to Bulk Barn for peanut butter M&Ms and mini-eggs).

The main downtown strip in St. John’s is George Street, and it’s basically a short little road lined with bars and pubs on each side with music pouring out into the street. We walked down here on Friday night, and had dinner at Yellow Belly. There were lots of interesting things on the menu I wanted to try (hello, short rib potato skins, hi there buffalo chicken nachos), but after a week of eating out, I ended up craving something familiar and had butternut squash soup and a grilled chicken sandwich. It was just what I needed.

On Saturday we did some required St. John’s sight-seeing, heading up to Signal Hill and out to Cape Spear which is the most easterly point in North America. We had dinner at Piatto, which is Danielle’s favourite restaurant in the city. We both had pizza: mine had spicy salami, fresh mozzarella, and piles of caramelized onions; Danielle’s had ricotta, garlic and roasted red peppers. Both had a super thin, crispy crust which is what I’ll be aiming for when I finally try out the pizza stone I bought in January at St. Lawrence Market.

Tangent Alert! I used to be obsessed with Orange Crush. It was my movie theater beverage of choice up until the early 2000s. I finally gave it up, only to replace it with Diet Pepsi, which was an addiction unto itself until last January, when I stopped drinking pop altogether (sometimes I still can’t believe it, but I was honestly out of control). So, in St. John’s, they have Pineapple Crush. Stop and think about that for a second. Danielle said I had to try it, and I took one sip and that was enough. It’s disgusting. We also picked up a can of Birch Beer just out of curiosity; it tastes like Root Beer which is weird enough, and when we poured it out, it was pink!

Can’t wait for the next reunion!
